Sorrow Star Vannessa Vasquez Nominated For a Daytime Emmy

Vannessa Vasquez currently stars as Camila on Hulu Network’s original series “East Los High,” a drama featuring an all Latino cast centered on the lives of teenagers growing up in East Los Angeles. Critics have praised Vasquez’s performance, so much so that she has earned a Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Performer in a New Approaches Drama Series.

Vasquez also stars in the indie horror film Sorrow as Mila Sweeney, a forensic psychologist who is kidnapped by two deranged serial killers, played by Eric Martinez and Mary Etuk. Mila manages to escape and exacts revenge against her captors.

Vasquez had planned to attend the screening tour for Sorrow with director Millie Loredo and actor Eric Martinez, but she will have to miss a few screenings to attend the Daytime Emmys. Etuk will be attending the screening tour in place of Vasquez.

“We are so proud of her,” said Loredo. “We will be cheering her on from the road!”

“East Los High” has been applauded for being Hulu Network’s first and only series with a cast comprised entirely of Latinos, and it tells of the teenagers’ lives from the point of view of the American Latino. The show tackles the issues of teen drug use, sex and shootings, among many other difficult themes.

Since her debut in the first season of the show, Vasquez has landed the lead in several films, including Sorrow, Misfire and Narca. She said it is her hard work and commitment to character that has gotten her noticed.

“I really work hard at what I do, and I think directors see that and other people start noticing that,” Vasquez said. “When you work with people on set and they see you work, they see how much you dive into character.”

Loredo admires Vasquez’s work and said she couldn’t find anyone more perfect for the role of Mila Sweeney, which required a lot of intensity. In fact, filming became so realistic and extreme for Vasquez she had to take a day off “to reset.”

“East Los High” is currently filming its third season, which will premiere on the Hulu Network this fall. The first two seasons are currently available to stream on Hulu. The series itself has been nominated for Outstanding New Approaches Drama Series and Vasquez’s co-star Daniella Vega was also nominated for Outstanding Performer in a New Approaches Drama Series.

The winners will be announced during the 42nd Daytime Emmy Awards ceremony on Sunday, April 26. We wish Vannessa the best of luck!
